IRONING TIPS

Silk is a fluid, organic material, and working with it is very different from other natural fabrics such as cotton or linen or wool. It requires you treat it in a way that makes it happy. It is a protein that’s very close to human hair and is sensitive to heat, cold and humidity. As mentioned in the CARE section of this website, I use sulfate free hair shampoo and conditioner to launder my scarves. They are air dried in a dryer with dryer balls and a fabric softener sheet to insure a soft, lovely drape. The last step in my scarf making process is ironing. Below are some tips when ironing your scarf:

I recommend starting in the middle of your scarf and ironing out to the edges. Keep in mind that you are coaxing the wrinkles out of the scarf by smoothing it with an iron. Be gentle. Try to avoid stretching the silk as you iron. I find it helpful to use the iron sideways instead of point first when ironing the edges of the scarf. Gently pull the edge straight as you iron over it.

Remember that you can always turn the iron to a higher heat if needed, but it’s a good idea to start out at low/medium or use the silk setting if your iron has one. A light spray of water can be used if needed.
